After he sold his green home business, Ronn Lepage was strolling around Honolulu in the middle of the afternoon marvelling at all of the empty restaurants. As an accountant and business consultant, he had been trained to “utilize underutilized assets for profit improvements”.  As he pondered his next business move, he wondered what he could do to help the restaurants.

The first step was to capture the attention of diners, so he created an app called “Happy Hour Here”.  The free app helps people to find happy hours and food specials in restaurants and bars that are close to them. In just over a year, there are 2600 Happy Hours listed from 750 establishments using the app in thirty-five cities.

“It’s a good deal for the restaurants to participate because you are instantly connected to motivated buyers,” shares Lepage. “The app uses advanced time and location-based algorithms to present the restaurant’s specials to diners in the area at precisely the time they are looking for something to eat.”

Restaurants can easily sign up for a free listing of their happy hours and specials. If the restaurant would like to be featured on the app or improve their rankings amongst their competition, there are tiered-pricing packages available.

The team will also work with the restaurant to boost their sales. “We did a gift card promotion with a local restaurant that was ranking number ten on the list and they wanted to get better,” smiles Lepage. “After the promotion, their happy hour was number one in the area.”

Lepage and his team have ambitious plans to capture the Canadian market and be the number one app for restaurants across North America within five years. They plan to keep their operations based in Saskatoon as “our development team has been incredible to work with. We are a more tech-savvy province than I suspected when I started. Good people are staying in Saskatchewan to grow the tech industry.”

HappyHourHere, a Saskatchewan-born app that helps diners easily find the best happy hour specials at restaurants and bars in their area, is now on the west coast, with 138 restaurants and 431 happy hours currently in its Vancouver database, and more being added all the time.

The free app, downloadable from the App Store and Google Play, was created and launched in Saskatchewan last December, and by the end of March this year the overall reach of the app was 35 cities, with 729 restaurants and 2,539 happy hours in the database. The app provides diners with a list of current happy hours and specials, sorted by distance from their location. Details about the happy hour menu items on offer, as well as the address and phone number of the restaurant, are delivered in one seamless app experience.

“It’s a time-and-location based app,” says Ronn Lepage, founder of HappyHourHere. “Diners get a list of partnering restaurants by distance, each listing the current happy hour specials for food and drinks. As well, if you want to plan an outing, the app provides the option of choosing time, date and location in advance. You can also search for specific menu items like ‘wings’ or ‘beer’.”

The app benefits both customers and restaurants, as it allows potential diners access to nearby deals while filling seats in the restaurants at times that are often slower.

“Going out to meet friends is fun, but we think it’s better to have ‘smart fun’, and that’s what this app provides – a way to meet up, maybe try new places, and save money at the same time,” says Lepage.

After 30 years as a partner with Deloitte Consulting, Lepage, a CPA, moved into entrepreneurial roles, first setting up an environmentally-sustainable home construction company, and then creating the HappyHourHere app to help restaurants be more profitable. “As an accountant by profession, I like to see money used wisely,” says Lepage.

In addition to downloading the free app from the App Store and Google Play, diners can follow HappyHourHere on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Heading out for drinks with friends is a great way to spend an evening — but if youʼre not careful it can get a bit expensive.
HappyHourHere, a Saskatoon-born free app that finds the best prices and promotions at restaurants, is here and ready to solve that problem.

Owner and founder Ronn Lepage came up with the idea for the app after noticing how empty restaurants are during their off-peak hours and as a former business consultant he immediately saw the potential to help businesses better utilize their space while also helping customers save some money.

The app is time and location based, so whenever you open it up it will show you all the nearby restaurants currently offering happy hour deals. Though, if youʼre keen to plan an outing in advance, you also have the option to chose different dates and locations.

“Weʼve also got a few extra features that we put into this version,” Lepage explains. “One is that once you get the list of restaurants you can say ‘OK Iʼm just looking for a glass of wine,ʼ so you can search for places offering wine specials during their happy hour.”

Currently, HappyHourNow is focused on users in Saskatchewan though they are slowly expanding west starting in cities like Calgary and Banff where Saskatchewan residents regularly visit.

The aim right now is to focus on pleasing the customers using the app when heading on a night out, Lepage said. But, as the user base grows he plans to start working more closely with restaurants to help them learn how to better promote their happy hour savings to better keep tables filled during the off hours.

Though the app only launched at the beginning of December, Lepage said he is already seeing great feedback from its users who say they are seeing huge savings on their nights out.

“Weʼve coined the phrase ‘Smart fun,ʼ ” Lepage finished. “Basically, the idea is that yeah itʼs always fun going out, but going out and going to a happy hour is just plain smart — why wouldnʼt you try.”
